How to Attract Students to Your Booth at On-Campus Job Fair Events

By Danielle Wirsansky on September 30, 2019

If college students are a demographic you want to hit when hiring for new employees for your company, then on-campus job fairs are essential events for a recruiter to hit. That is where the job-seeking students will go first to find a job as it is convenient for them and they are more likely to trust a company that has been vetted and approved by their university to come to campus and hire students.

Yet, there can be a lot of competition at these on-campus job fair events beyond the students competing for new roles. The companies are in fierce competition as well. This is not only to get as many applicants as possible but the best candidates as possible so that your company can truly find candidates that are the right fit.

There are so many booths for students to stop by at these events. What can you do to make sure that students stop by yours and see what your company is about? Read on to learn how to attract students to your booth at on-campus job fair events!

Application Stations

Getting students to your booth at these on-campus job fair events is one thing—how do you seal the deal and get these students to apply? Sending them home with a business card and information on how to apply is one thing. But that is a lot of extra outside work you are asking a student to do, especially for a job they may or may not receive. They have probably applied to a lot of different companies for the fair already. They may feel that they have already done enough and not want to leave the fair to do more work to find a job.

So, if you have already got students at your booth, interested in what you have to say and in your company, do not let them get away! Create application stations at your booth so that these students can apply right away. Do not let their excitement and enthusiasm for your company escape them—have them apply right then and there when everything is fresh in their minds. That way you can definitely get in all the applications you can.

Students will be more likely to come by your booth too if they can tell you have an application station there because it shows them that you are serious about hiring students and that they can just apply and be done with it right then and there. If students have questions while filling out the application, you or a trusted associate is right there to answer their questions for them too.

If you want to go even further, you could even have an interview station where students that meet your initial criteria can have an interview with a recruiter right then and there. Now that is an effective use of a recruiter’s time!

Well Designed Information Packets

If an application station is not something you can offer at present, do not fret! Instead, make sure you have promotional material for your company and the position and then go one step further: make sure it is well informed and well designed.

A well-designed information packet shows a student how professional a company is. It can also show how high scale or high end it may be. These packets will really reflect the aesthetic, mission, and style of a company and will be what a student takes away with them to convince them to come back to this company and apply later, either at home or at the library.

You want your job description to be really clear and detailed so that students know what they are getting into. You want it to be well written too so a student will be attracted to apply. You want your materials to be enticing as well, from the colors to the font to the graphics. You want your company to be set apart from the others. Just because you are hiring students does not mean that you should not be representing your company at it’s best or that you care less because of your demographic.

Showing that your materials are well-designed shows a company that is at the top of its game and knows what it is doing. Set yourself apart from the other companies hiring—not just at an on-campus job fair, but in general!

In the end, there a lot of different factors that can help intrigue potential student employees over to your booth at on-campus job fair events. But showing students you are serious about hiring and hiring NOW is a really great tactic to lure them over and help make your hunt for the right candidate that much more competitive and effective.
