Hair Accessories College Students Rave About

By Amanda Cohen on September 14, 2017

College students need to keep up with not only homework, a social life, their course load, and their physical and mental well-being but also the latest fashion trends. It’s pretty easy to spot a new clothing trend or a new shoe trend, but when it comes to new hair accessory trends, that’s when it gets to be a little tricky.

Even though it can be difficult to keep up with new hair accessory trends and it can be difficult to pick and choose which ones capture your overall unique personal style, there are some hair accessories that have maintained a huge presence on college campuses. If you aren’t as up to date on the coolest and best hair accessories, read on so that you can get shopping and get styling!

Beanies

Beanies were always immensely popular in the winter months, but with the strange weather changes (thanks, global warming), beanies are now being worn all year round. Beanies don’t necessarily have to be a wooly, thick hat for warmth, but rather they are more of a fashion statement than anything else.

Beanies are extremely stylish and a great way to cover up your hair on those days where you haven’t been on top of washing your hair … don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Since beanies have become so insanely popular, more and more designers are coming up with new and creative beanie styles.

There are beanies with puff balls, there are beanies with lace, there are cable-knit beanies, solid-colored beanies, colorful beanies, and more. The beautiful thing about beanies is that they aren’t overly expensive and you can buy them anywhere … from Amazon to Urban Outfitters to Free People to even eBay!

Top-Knot Headbands

I wish I could pull off the top-knot headband look, but unfortunately, I can’t, and it’s honestly pretty depressing. However, for those of you who are looking to try out a new style, the top-knot headband might be for you! The efficient and practical attributes about top-knot headbands are that you don’t actually need to buy a product that is listed as a “Top-Knot Headband.”

All you have to do is cut up some old fabrics from items around your house and boom, you’ve got the perfect piece of material to complete this stylish hairstyle. All you have to do is cut a medium-width piece of fabric that is long enough to wrap around your head and knot at the top. If you are going for a country-chic look, then you should use a bandana.

However, if you are going for more of an everyday look, just use a simple piece of fabric (it can even be part of a bedsheet). Top-knot headbands are great when all of your hair is pulled back with just a few voluminous pieces hanging in the front.

Big Hair Clips

Big hair clips are for more than just holding up pieces of hair that you don’t want to get in the way when you are blow-drying your hair. When I use the word “big” I really mean “big.” Tiny hair clips do absolutely nothing and they don’t usually add any sort of style to a person’s hair.

A big hair clip is great for pulling back some hair while leaving a few loose strands out to play! When using one of these “complicated” accessories, you should pull back the amount of hair that you want out of your face and clip it center in the back of your head, but make it a high clip.

The big hair clip is perfect when you want a cute messy look when walking to class, or even for a swanky night out at your local college bar (okay, swanky might be a little bit of an overstatement, but you get what I mean). Dress it up, dress it down, the possibilities of the big hair clip are truly endless.

So, head over to CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, or wherever to buy a pack of three big clips for a very reasonable price.

Black Hair-Tie

Last, but certainly not least, the simple black hair-tie. I probably should’ve put this one at the top because it is more important than any of the hair accessories that I listed. The simple black hair-tie is every person with long hair’s best friend. It’s reliable. It’s strong. It’s there when no one else is.

The black hair-tie has been with us through thick-and-thin, and I am forever grateful. Need to pull your hair back at the bar? Black hair-tie. Need to put your hair in a bun while sitting in a bubble bath? Black hair-tie. Need to have the feeling of something laying tight around your wrist? Black hair-tie. Never underestimate the power of the black hair-tie and never take it for granted.

Well, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. A list of the hair accessories college students go crazy for. So load up your purse with cash and go do some shopping!
