How to Convince Your Friend to Get a Tutor

If you’ve ever had the experience of performing poorly in a class, you know what it feels like to take a test with low internal confidence. And if you’re anything like me, you know this feeling all too well.

Being an on-campus tutor, I’ve definitely discovered services I had no idea existed — like free, on-campus tutoring in pretty much any subject. Additionally, tutoring is offered by more than one department. I’ll bet you at your school, it’s the same way. The point of coming to college is to learn, and if you’re struggling with a course, I know someone else is, too.

So what if it’s a close friend of yours, who “never has to study,” and makes A’s by sitting in class and by simply looking at the professor, who has finally hit a road block, and desperately needs help in one of their classes? How do you convince them to utilize campus resources? Lucky for you, I’ve got some tips.

1. “Did you know it’s completely free?”

College students love free stuff, am I right? T-shirts, water bottles, foam fingers, you name it! But some students think tutoring is something you have to pay for. On 99 percent of college campuses, tutoring is a resource that is offered to all students, in every discipline. Get online and type in “name of your school on-campus tutoring” and I guarantee something will pop up. It’s that easy. So your friends have no excuse.

2. Early on or late in the game

Beginning work with a tutor early on in the semester can benefit you throughout the semester. Hearing the information more than once in a different way is what makes one-on-one and group tutoring so successful. But just because you didn’t get a tutor right away doesn’t mean seeing a tutor last minute doesn’t also have its benefits. Getting help with one or two concepts can be the difference between an A and a B on a test. Totally worth it.

3. Stigma? It doesn’t exist

Before I became a tutor, I thought walking in to get help meant defeat. I thought it sent the message that I couldn’t get my crap together and I needed a “mother” to set me straight. Definitely not the case. If your friend thinks they’ll be stigmatized for the rest of their college career because they sought out free tutoring resources, smack ‘em. It’s not true. I can attest to that first-hand.

4. Tutors have already taken the class

At most universities, it is required that a tutor take (and receive a B or above in) the classes they tutor. This isn’t some kind of mumbo-jumbo coming from some snotty know-it-all; they know how hard it was to do well in the class, they remember working their booties off … they’re one of the greatest resources.

5. Why would you not?

It’s like studying with classmates. It’s like a GroupMe in real-time. There’s no reason not to seek out free services on campus. Your friends are crazy if they don’t do it.
