There is so much talent on college campuses these days. Sadly, there aren’t many outlets through which to learn and discover new music and artists that are also focused on getting their degree. SoundCloud helps new and rising artists get discovered, but what about the ones who aren’t getting enough traction?

Want to know who the top collegiate DJ is in the nation? Here is your ticket to the biggest competition in the U.S.

What is Campus DJ?

Campus DJ is operated by CAMPVS, an intercollegiate entertainment platform focused on talent discovery. The venture has initial backing from Universal Music Group, leading Silicon Valley angel investors, and a strategic partnership that includes Village on Telluride, the Capstone Cottages of San Marcos, and the Flats at West Village. Past sponsors include Chegg, Chipotle, MINI USA, Monster Energy, and Tinder.

Campus DJ, founded in 2013, maintains its original objective of providing collegiate talent with unique and life changing opportunities.

“With Campus DJ, we are looking to give top college music talent a platform to showcase and gain exposure and connections,” said co-founder Evan Shapiro.

Based in Los Angeles, it is the only competition to discover and reward local DJ talent. Known by its former name, National DJ Championship, Campus DJ has awarded more than $300,000 in total gear and cash prizing to participating college DJs and fans at events.

The company’s founders previously produced a nationwide College Battle of the Bands and MovieFest. The demand for such a competition came from the increasing number of DJ submissions to Battle of the Bands. Now as its own genre competition, the heat is on to find the best DJ and music producer nationwide.

Highlighting past winners and finalists

The first-ever winner of the Campus DJ competition and Columbia University alum Nick Perloff, who goes by the stage name Flaxo, was majoring in political science and economics as a sophomore when he competed for the title of the nation’s best DJ in 2013.

In addition to winning first place, he also won a brand new MINI Cooper S Countryman, a touring package from Live Nation, a custom filter on Dubbler, gear from Jabra, and a cash donation from Chegg for his selected charity: 826 National. You can find his music on SoundCloud, YouTube, and Spotify. Check out an original track below.

Bentley Montes and King Tutt, representing UCLA and Icon Collective, were 2014’s Campus DJ winners. With more than 1,500 followers on SoundCloud, LA-based Bentley Montes landed a record signing by Mad Decent, Diplo’s notorious label, for his remix of Jackal’s “Animal Style.” Check out the track below.

Just last month, Campus DJ named DJ Kurr the Campus DJ winner of 2015. A student from Florida State University, Miami native, and only 20 years old, he’s gone on to open for major acts including Juicy J, Drake, Wale, and A$AP Rocky.

Check him out on SoundCloud and YouTube. Here’s over 40 minutes for you to play at your next house party.

Chicago has competed on Campus DJ since 2014. Jill Strange from Columbia College is only one of two female DJs — besides DJ Courtney of Emory University — to make it to the Top 4 and Top 2 Finalist spots. A senior cinema art and science major, she has performed at various Chicago clubs and bars. She even had a cameo on Chicago PD! Check out Strange on Chicago PD here.

Sokko and Lyons, from the University of Oregon, have gone on to become solo artists since their debut on Campus DJ. You can find Sokko on SoundCloud and Facebook. Lyons, while still on SoundCloud and Twitter, seems to have taken some time off. The two continue to support each other’s careers. Check out their original track below.
