The Box Office in the Winter: What's Playing During the Holidays?

Winter is a convenient time of the year to assuage your movie appetite.  Some will say summertime is, citing names of those big budgeted, A-list starring blockbusters including remakes and sequels to successful movies, such as The Dark Knight, The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel’s The Avengers and Harry Potter.

Unlike the long summer break when everyone’s off to travel or intern around the world, however, the festive and family-oriented winter holiday will present a nice opportunity to gather people up and go see a movie.  So when you go home this winter break, unwrap those presents, have some turkey, gather the family and drive to the local cinema.  With the following previews, I hope to convince that you don’t have to wait until summer to have a kick-ass time at the movie theater.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14)— I don’t know if it’s just me, but something tells me that this prequel trilogy will be far much, much better than The Star Wars prequel trilogy.  With the original Lord of the Rings trilogy as one of the most financially and critically successful film trilogies of all time, its prequel trilogy, The Hobbit, has been under the fans’ radars for many years now.  The first installment of the prequel trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, explores the adventures of a young Bilbo Baggins. Martin Freeman (of the English The Office and BBC’s Sherlock) takes over the role of Bilbo Baggins from Ian Holm, who also makes an appearance in the film. Returning from the original trilogy are Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood and Andy Serkis as Gandalf, Elrond, Frodo and Gollum, respectively.  Seeing the familiar faces would be a fun start to an expectedly awesome trilogy.

Django Unchained (December 25)— I think it’s safe to say this film will be fantastic. Why? Because Quentin Tarantino knows how to make films plain, simple and funny.  This is a western-style action story of an escaped slave, Django (Jamie Foxx) in the Deep South rescuing his wife from the plantation of a vicious but charismatic landowner (Leonardo DiCaprio). Along for the ride is Django’s sidekick, German bounty hunter Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Waltz had his huge, Oscar-winning break in Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards, which affirms that directors like to reuse actors for bolstering solid, attention grabbing casts (for instance, a friend of mine thinks of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises as Inception 2).  Indeed the cast rounded out by Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and many other acclaimed actors (including a small appearance by Jonah Hill) shouts, “We’re going to knock your socks off!”

Les Misérables (December 25)—As a musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel, the film is expected to be mostly sung-through, instead of spoken dialogues, much to the pleasure of the musical fans but to the chagrin of fans of Victor Hugo’s classic novel.  Regardless, you will be charmed by a terrific story told by a group of extraordinary cast, including Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.
