Packing Up Your Kitchen
Your kitchen can be one of the most complicated rooms in your home to pack. Kitchens tend to have some of the most items (in number) and most diverse items in them. Packing an entire kitchen can be hectic, especially if you have to worry about moving the bigger appliances as well.
As a college student, you more than likely are not living in your permanent home. When it comes time for you to move, it will be time to pack up your entire kitchen. From Tupperware to silverware, packing everything in the kitchen can be overwhelming. Since there is so much to be done, it can help to know where to start and how to make packing as smooth a transition as possible.
Here are a few tips on how to pack up your personal kitchen.
Get rid of items
To start packing your entire kitchen, the first tip is don’t. You’d be surprised how many items you have collected over the years that you don’t ever use. Sometimes certain things look appealing in the store, but once you purchase it, you realize there is no real use for it and it just sits there.
Getting rid of unnecessary kitchenware can eliminate a ton of stress and lessen the load to bring to the new place. You also might want to consider if you even want certain kitchen items coming to your new home. If you plan on changing the color scheme of your new kitchen, then some items may not match.
To get rid of unwanted kitchenware, you can also ask other people if they are looking. Post something on social media about how you are giving away items, and the best way to contact you. You can even sell the items if they are in nice condition and make a little extra money this way. People are always looking for home items. You never know who could use the items you don’t want, so it is better to ask around than to throw something away.
If no one wants your unwanted goods, thrift stores will likely take them off your hands. Some stores compensate, and others do not. Either way, your items won’t be wasted.
When you start to pack up your kitchen, you want to make sure your dishes are protected. Using newspaper helps you prevent cracks and scratches in your delicate glass dishes. There is nothing worse than going to unpack your kitchen items and finding broken dishes, especially sentimental china that may have been passed down in your family. You should wrap each individual glass dish in newspaper to provide some additional cushion in case something happens to drop; newspaper also serves as a barrier between each dish, keeping them from rubbing and scratching each other.
This is an old trick used by many, and I’m sure a lot of your parents and grandparents would vouch for that. Newspaper also comes in handy when you are not quite ready to unpack your items yet in the new place. If you plan on storing away some of your dishes, newspaper can help lessen dust collection on your dishes.
When you label your boxes, you make packing and even unpacking so much easier. Labelling boxes when packing helps you keep everything separated and in order. While you are packing up various items, it helps to know where you put certain things instead of having to open up every box and looking to see what’s inside.
You can label your boxes to fit your specific needs. You know the best way to separate your items and you also know which “label” will help you recall what is in the box, so there is no specific way to label anything. Office supply stores have nice labels you can purchase and use if you would like an official “clean” look.
You can also go the old-fashioned way and simply write the label right on the box with a big black sharpie marker. Side-note: if you are wondering where you can get boxes, you can go to department stores of even dollar stores and ask if they have any boxes to spare. A lot of time stores have boxes that you can have for free before they get crushed and compacted in a machine for recycling.
Separate “like” dishes
When you go about packing up your kitchen, right along with labelling your boxes, you can also separate your like dishes. This means setting aside the large plates from the saucers and the spoons from the forks. This will help you be able to see how much you have and also easily locate them when it is time to unpack because they are all together. If your dishes are all mixed up, it may be a little difficult to pack them all up.
However you choose to pack up your kitchen, these were a few helpful tips to make the process a little easier. Good luck!
