How To Dress Like A Lean, Mean, Fashion Machine

By Amanda Cohen on May 6, 2016

The 2016 Met Gala acted as a stage for The Weeknd as well as the runway for all of the attendees. The “out of this world” theme “Manus x Machina” forced everyone in attendance to get creative with their attire. While some people balanced black-tie and Machina attire perfectly, others looked as if they were wearing a Halloween costume.

Instead of berating those who did not embrace the theme to the best of their abilities, I thought I would honor those who slayed the red carpet. Here are my seven favorite celebrity outfits of the 2016 Met Gala!

Taylor Swift – Louis Vuitton

You know the Chainsmokers’ song “I want to be like Kanye?” Well, they need to update the song to, “I want to be like Tay Tay.” Let’s all just take a minute to bow down to Taylor Swift and her creative, yet classy, Louis Vuitton dress at the 2016 Met Gala.

Taylor Swift really embraced the theme and wore a short, cutout, loose dress made of metallic, foiled/scaled material. The dress has a high-neckline underlined and divided in half with midnight black material. Her shoes are strappy and “lace up” to her knees, which goes along with her edgy hair-do and black lipstick. Even though the theme of the Met Gala is X Machina, the only type of machine Taylor appears to be is a fashion machine.

Alicia Vikander – Louis Vuitton

I am not surprised to find Alicia Vikander, the star of the movie Ex Machina on the list of the best-dressed women at the 2016 Met Gala. Channeling her inner machine, Vikander drapes herself in a short Louis Vuitton dress that has a bright red leather top with a gold mesh finish and a black, white, and gold skirt.

The harshness of the colors together as well as the leather and combat-boot heels screams X Machina. The appearance of the white fabric helps make the dress a little less harsh and more compatible with the weather, while also bringing out the beauty that is Vikander’s olive skin-tone.

Kendall Jenner – Atelier Versace

As much as everyone loves to hate on the Kardashian/Jenner family, they cannot possibly say a mean word about Kendall Jenner’s show-stopper outfit at the Met Gala this past weekend. Her Atelier Versace dress, although not as outright obvious in theme, contains distinct lines and sharp shapes that add a technological touch to the beautiful outfit.

Jenner embraces the cutout trend, exposing the sides of her torso. In order to keep the dress classy and not too revealing, she is also wearing a high-neckline. The dress contours her body perfectly, accentuating her long legs. The light blues and white complement her tan perfectly and add a lighter flare to her darker makeup and slicked-back hair. Bravo Kendall — once again you absolutely slay the red carpet.

Huma Abedin – Altuzarra

Huma Abedin looks absolutely stunning in her Altuzarra gown. The loose-fitting beaded gown drapes over her body beautifully. The combination of olive-green, forest-green, black, silver, and grey mesh together perfectly and look fantastic with her dark hair and red lips.

The beading and metallic tones are consistent with the theme without looking too “cartoony.” The high-neckline and loose bodice look fantastic on Abedin and the draping of fabric in the skirt is both whimsical and machine-like. Huma, you defy all boundaries of beauty and grace. I salute you!

Gigi Hadid – Tommy Hilfiger

Gigi Hadid has consistently looked exceptional on the red carpet, and the 2016 Met Gala was no exception. Her floor-length, dark grey Tommy Hilfiger dress fit her like a glove and complemented her skin tone. The beaded-bodice is stunning and ties in perfectly with the X Machina high-tech theme. The bodice turns into a body suit, as the sheer fabric of skirt exposes the sparkling body suit.

Realizing the high-necklines are all the rage, Hadid’s dress stems from the skirt in a medium-sized piece of fabric, wrapping around her neck in a charcoal beaded necklace. As if her stunning looks and amazing outfit weren’t enough, Hadid truly went all out and made her nails and fingers machine-like with some of the coolest jewelry I have ever seen.

Cindy Crawford – Balmain

Cindy Crawford kills the red carpet game at the age of 50 at the 2016 Met Gala sporting a floor-length, long-sleeved Balmain metallic gown. The gown is fitted and exposes the pads of her shoulders. The tight dress has a mini train that follows Crawford as she struts down the red carpet.

The metallic material and jewels screams X Machina without looking like a Halloween costume. The dress shows off Crawford’s rocking bod without being overly revealing. Snaps to Crawford for looking better than most 20-year-olds do!

Hailey Baldwin – Tommy Hilfiger

Hailey Baldwin’s uncle, Alec Baldwin, might be hilarious, but there is nothing hilarious to how stunning she looked in her gown designed by Tommy Hilfiger at the 2016 Met Gala. The floor-length gown hugs her body beautifully and the black and silver beading scream X Machina.

The high-neckline (clearly a theme in 2016 fashion trends) is paired with a large slit exposing her leg and an exposed back. The vertical stripes elongate her body and shows off her beautiful curves and her toned legs. To top off an amazing outfit, Baldwin’s high ponytail, or what I like to call “the power pony,” makes her look both graceful and bad-ass. Well done Baldwin, you keep doing you!
