5 Artists You Must Listen To While Studying

By Sarah Christine Davis on December 8, 2015

We all know what a pain in the behind studying can be. No matter how much coffee you consume, how often you take breaks to nap, and how many study groups you organize with your friends, it never seems to get any easier.

However, according to a study from Stanford University, listening to music has been proven to help your brain pay attention. In addition to that, listening to music is also a great way to keep yourself calm when studying spins you into a spiral of stress.

FSU student Cody Vanderploeg says, “Music takes me to my happy place so I don’t end up crying while studying for a final.”

If you want to be able to pay more attention to your homework or you just want to avoid crying while cramming information into your head, music may be the answer.

And if you need help figuring out which artists to listen to while you study, look no further! Check out the list below for five artists that you should listen to while studying.

alt-J

alt-J has a sound like no other that Spotify poignantly describes as a “signature blend of layered, folk-inflected dub-pop and soaring alternative rock.” If that’s not unique, I don’t know what is.

From their freshman album An Awesome Wave to their most recent album, This Is All Yours, alt-J never comes close to disappointing.

I recommend listening to them when you first begin studying and have to get focused in the beginning. Their sound is inspiring, but too many listens and you might find yourself looking up all of their amazing videos on YouTube!

Explosions in the Sky

Full of moving instrumental indie rock and dramatic soundtracks, the music of Explosions in the Sky will leave you feeling inspired.

If you’ve ever watched the show “Friday Night Lights,” you’ve undoubtedly heard of this quartet’s awesome sound.

This is good music to listen to when you just have to buckle down and focus but need some background sound to push you into gear.

Glass Animals

Similar to alt-J, Glass Animals has an unmatchable sound that can’t really be compared to anyone else out there. Their trippy sound is sure to get your brain churning out some amazing stuff.

Perhaps the group makes such amazing music because they’ve been friends since they were 14-year-old children in Oxford, England. Whatever the reason, their ethereal sound is worth a listen.

Kendrick Lamar

If you want to get lost in the music of one of the talented rap artists of our time, listen to Kendrick Lamar. His music will get you pumped for studying when you’re reaching that point — which we’ve all reached before — when you say, “I literally can’t do this anymore.”

Check out To Pimp A Butterfly or good kid, m.A.A.d city to get your heart pumping and remind your brain that you can in fact keep doing this.

Ratatat

Ratatat is what you need to listen to when it’s 2 in the morning and you still have 1,000 words to write before your class at 8 a.m.

Spotify describes the duo’s music as “rock meets electronica.” You’ve probably heard of them before; their hit song Loud Pipes has nearly 24 million listens on Spotify alone. You can check out their Spotify website at this link.

If you enjoy the music of MGMT or M83, I can say with utmost positivity that you will enjoy the music of Ratatat.
