For all sports junkies out there, showing pride for your team is a top priority. Having the best tailgates, pregame parties, or hosting away game parties for any sport or team is not merely a fun time with friends; it’s a mandatory event on par with nationally recognized holidays.

While attending decked out tailgates at football games with every type of food you can imagine or buying front row season tickets for your favorite team are great ways of showing support, there are simpler ways for fans to showcase their support to everyone, making it impossible for friends or arch rivals to forget where their allegiance lies.

One especially fun way to do this is by decorating your apartment in coordination with different aspects of your favorite team. This is best and most applicable in the living room or family room, since these rooms are usually where all of the hanging out and parties occur in the apartment.

There are infinite ways to bring the cheering section back home with you after the game. Probably the most obvious way in which to incorporate team spirit into your home would be through the paint themes.

Say your favorite college football is the Michigan Wolverines (a.k.a., the most winning team in college football and the team whose head coach is now Jim Harbaugh). You could paint the walls of a room maize and blue. How you decide to use those two colors on four walls is where your unique creativity comes into play.

From maize and blue stripes covering all four walls to alternating solid colors with two walls being yellow and two being blue, the options are seemingly endless. Polka dots, chevron, diamonds and different sizes and amounts of stripes are all cool ways to highlight the colors of your team.

Painting the walls immediately sets the mood for the room, whether it be bright and intense or softer and more relaxing tones and shades of the colors your team proudly reps. Either way, the paint alone reveals your inner team spirit.

If painting obnoxious colors onto the walls of your sophisticated apartment doesn’t sound appealing, don’t fret because there are more ways to decorate a room in the name of sports.

My father is a huge sports fan. Being born and raised in Michigan, we have collected a good number of old Red Wings jerseys, Michigan footballs, and other assorted sports memorabilia. And, of course, my dad always wants these objects displayed in our family for all to see. Even if he got a Michigan pillow for a dollar at a garage sale or handed down from his parents or a friend, he plops it right on the coach for everyone to know that the family room is now the Big House.

Pillows are super easy accessories to a room that help pull together the overall theme of the room. Going back to the Michigan themed room, painting the walls maize and blue would go together perfectly with navy blue pillows. Else a simple white or beige room can go great with maize, blue, or block M pillows. Sometimes the subtle color schemes of the pillows in a room are all that are necessary to create a sports themed room.

Another thing that many fans decorate rooms with are paintings or pictures. My friend in college has a gigantic picture of Michigan stadium covering the entire back wall of his apartment. While his may have been a bit extreme in size, any type of picture can add something new to any room.

Even if you hate sports, or have no interest in any level of team, adding a picture in a room can still complement the room with something unique. If you’re having trouble meeting people in a new job or community, throw a sports party and hang up a poster or picture of a player to go with the theme.

Overall, paint, pillows, memorabilia, posters, and pictures will all enhance a room to create an inspiring sports atmosphere. Supporting a team is a great hobby, or way of life for many that should not stop when you step foot in your apartment or house.
