Psych's Final Season Coming to a Close
This is it guys: we now only have one more episode left till Psych officially ends. Episodes eight and nine were two of the most creative episodes in the entire show. Here’s how the penultimate episodes did:
Highs:
Episode 8: I love the concept that there are other paranormal consultants across police departments. Betsey Brannigan, the new head detective, is also awesome as the anti-Juliet. She’s everything Juliet is not and, strangely, the dynamic works. Shawn and Gus are flummoxed by her while in the end Lassiter comes to adore her. The tables are flipped and it’s fascinating to watch that play out.
Episode 9: Okay, I’ll admit this episode had actually managed to scare me a little, which was great. It’s hard to count or adequately name the number of horror movie homages, but the Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque house was definitely one of my favorites. I also really enjoyed the trippy format, with viewers transitioning in and out of Gus’ mind.
Lows:
Episode 8: The actual mystery in this episode was pretty weak. The clues seemed arbitrary and shoddily placed. They seemed to make fairly large leaps based on very scant information observed by Shawn.
Episode 9: The underlying message behind this episode was somewhat problematic for me. Let me explain–I love that Gus and Shawn’s friendship has proven that it can weather the barrage of changes that are happening around them. I have a problem with the fact that Gus still seems overly reliant on Gus: When does his character get to mature? Cog Blocked seemed like it was going to take Gus in a more interesting direction, but now I’m reconsidering.
Tune in next week for the last installment. Onwards to the finale!
